They weren’t drawn from any reference. They just showed up the way eyes always do when I paint without thinking. Between and around them, pieces of the manga peek through the layers. You can catch fragments of dialogue if you get close enough. Shinji saying he might have been pretending to be alive this whole time. Someone telling someone else to snap out of it. Lines I’ve read a hundred times that hit different when they’re half-buried under paint and barely surviving.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The thing about Evangelion is that it already looks like how I feel when I paint. Messy, too much happening, characters who don’t fully understand what they’re inside of. So tearing it apart and folding it into my own work wasn’t destruction. It was more like a conversation between two things that were already saying the same stuff. The manga didn’t disappear. It just stopped being a book and started being material. I glued them all onto a canvas I’d already painted dark, stuck them down with wood glue so they’re not going anywhere, and then drew lines between them with acrylic and oil stick. Pink ones, white ones, red, green, whatever color felt right for that connection.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The thing is, I’ve been saying “everything is connected” for years, but I’d never actually drawn the lines before. This time I did. The lookbook photo connects to the painting it was shot in front of. That painting connects to the sketch that started it. The sketch connects to a photo of me reading manga on the floor at 2am. It all goes somewhere. None of it is random, even the parts that felt random at the time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e If you step back, the Polaroids look like stars scattered across a dark sky, and the lines between them turn into something like a constellation. My own constellation. There’s something about painting on a small canvas during a broadcast where the noise in your head just stops. No plan. Your hand moves before you do. Red bled through in spots like a pulse underneath the dirt, and the turquoise at the bottom corner appeared out of nothing. Maybe the signal switched channels for a second and I just caught it. In audio engineering, the noise floor is the low hum that sits underneath every recording. It’s always there. You can’t remove it, and even if you could, the silence that follows would be worse. I think this painting is something like that. It’s not a well-crafted pop song, definitely not a sweet melody. The dark one showed up first.
