[Polaroid Constellation/ 폴라로이드 별자리] ⠀

 I printed out a bunch of Polaroids. Some are from 2Y lookbook shoots where I’m the  model. Some are photos of paintings I’ve made. There’s one of me sitting on the floor surrounded by stacked-up manga, just reading. I glued them all onto a canvas I’d already painted dark, stuck them down with wood glue so they’re not going anywhere, and then drew lines between them with acrylic and oil stick. Pink ones, white ones, red, green, whatever color felt right for that connection.

 The thing is, I’ve been saying “everything is connected” for years, but I’d never actually drawn the lines before. This time I did. The lookbook photo connects to the painting it was shot in front of. That painting connects to the sketch that started it. The sketch connects to a photo of me reading manga on the floor at 2am. It all goes somewhere. None of it is random, even the parts that felt random at the time.

 If you step back, the Polaroids look like stars scattered across a dark sky, and the lines between them turn into something like a constellation. My own constellation. Nobody drew it for me, but the things I’ve lived became the dots, and the dots lined themselves up on their own.

 폴라로이드를 여러 장 인화했다. 내가 모델로 찍은 2Y 룩북 사진도 있고, 내 그림을 찍은 것도 있고, 만화책을 잔뜩 쌓아두고 읽고 있는 사진도 있다. 이미 어둡게 칠해둔 캔버스 위에 목공풀로 하나씩 붙였다. 떨어지지 않게. 그 다음 아크릴과 오일스틱으로 사진과 사진 사이에 선을 그었다. 핑크, 화이트, 빨강, 초록, 이 연결에 맞는 색으로.

“모든 것은 연결되어 있다”는 말을 몇 년째 해왔는데, 선을 직접 그어본 건 이번이 처음이었다. 룩북 사진은 그 뒤에 걸려 있던 그림과 이어진다. 그 그림은 시작이 된 스케치와 이어지고, 스케치는 새벽 두 시에 바닥에 앉아 만화 읽던 내 사진과 이어진다. 전부 어딘가로 간다. 그때는 아무 의미 없어 보였던 것들까지.

 한 발 물러서 보면 폴라로이드가 어두운 하늘에 흩뿌려진 별처럼 보이고, 사이사이 선들이 별자리 같은 걸 만들어낸다. 내 별자리. 누가 그려준 적 없지만, 살아온 것들이 점이 되고 그 점들이 알아서 서로 이어졌다.
